    Searching for Chess in US Newspaper Archives

         You can search US newspaper pages from 1777-1963 or use the U.S. Newspaper Directory to find information about American newspapers published between 1690-present. Chronicling America is sponsored jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress. Visit site
         A search of "chess" for Ohio newspapers turned up 4,096 hits. In some cases the images are too fuzzy to read; if that's the case try clicking on the PDF view.
         At the left is a clipping from the Toledo (Ohio) Union Journal dated January 7, 1945 about a simul given by chess and checker champion Newell Banks (1887-1977).
