A Nice Win By Francis La Count

Back in 1928 in the Metropolitan League interclub matches the Brooklyn Chess Club started poorly losing two out of their first three matches, but bounced back with five straight wins. It was only good enough for second place behind a strong performance by the Manhattan Chess Club which won the trophy for the third time.
Following a bad defeat by a score of 6-2 at the hands of Manhattan in the first round they defeated Stuyvestant by a score of 5.5-2.5 then lost again to the Rice-Progressive Chess Club 3.5-4.5. Brooklyn then scored close wins of 4.5-3.5 over the Marshall and Empire City clubs then disposed of the Norwegian Chess Club by a score of 5-3. Next, the Hungarian Chess Cub was defeated by a score of 4.5-3.5. Finally they gave a 7.5-2.5 drubbing to the Hungarian Chess Club. Manhattan was undefeated. The Final standings were:

Manhattan 8.0-0.0
Brooklyn 6.0-2.0
Marshall 5.5-2.5
Hungarian 5.0-3.0
Rice Progressive 4.5-3.5
Norwegian 3.5-4.5
Empire City 2.5-5.5
Stuyvestant 1.0-7.0
Philidor 0.0-8.0

One especially interesting game was the one between F.J. LeCount, ex-champion of the Brooklyn Chess Club and Milton Hanauer, former State Champion and member of the Marshall Chess Club. LeCount's win helped Brooklyn secure their victory in the match. LeCount was born on November 11, 1890 and just a little over a year after this game was played, he died suddenly on August 4, 1929 at the age of 38.
