Over the weekend I became aware that FIDE announced the biggest ever sponsorship deal with a Costa Rican company that is the producer of Motiva silicone breast implants. The deal is good throughout next year which has been declared the Year of Women in Chess by the FIDE Council.
The project outlines plans for "future women empowerment path within FIDE for increased lasting support and, as a result, boosting female participation in all areas of chess life."
The FIDE Women's Commission went through some "restructuring" recently. I'm not into FIDE politics, but my guess is that is has something to do with internal politics.
Not all the female players have welcomed the deal. Some terms used for it have been gross, misogynistic, degrading and humiliating. One Canadian female player wondered if FIDE would "bring a penis enlargement company to sponsor the men’s World Championship.” Some online players have joked that prizes for women’s events should now include breast enlargement and some have even mentioned the names of female players whose appearance could be improved by breast enlargement.
Others have welcomed the deal though because women's chess needs sponsors and hopefully it would make it possible for women to play professionally. Of course, they already can play professionally if they are good enough and play in tournaments with the men.
FIDE stated they aren't encouraging breast enlargement, but if a woman (they specifically said "adult" probably to be politically correct) makes the choice to do so, then FIDE "endorses Motiva, a company that has demonstrated its strong commitment towards women.”
Financially it's probably a good deal. The cosmetic surgery market is projected to reach almost 67 BILLION dollars in the next five years. Oddly though, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery stated that in 2018, breast reduction (not enlargement!) and chin augmentation were two of the most popular surgical procedures! By the way, how much breast implants cost depends on the location, doctor and type of implant used. Typically the surgery ranges from $5,000 to $10,000. Because it is a cosmetic procedure, health insurance usually doesn't cover it.
Is this deal the kind FIDE should be getting in to? That is the question!
