Just saw this obituary in the Cleveland Plain Dealer: GM Anatoly Lein passed away on Thursday, March 1st. He was 86 years old. His wife, Barbara Lein (nee Gottlieb) passed away on February 16, 2018.
Before he quit smoking Lein was a chain smoker and I was watching him at a tournament standing with his hands clasped behind his back, holding a cigarette and tap, tap, tapping the lit end with his index finger. Seemed like a difficult trick.
Not sure. I seem to remember hearing that when he emigrated here (New Jersey first, later Cleveland) he had to promise he would not work in any scientific profession. As far as I know he played in tournaments and gave lessons out of his home. I think his wife whom he met in Cleveland was an attorney.
I enjoyed the coauthored tactic puzzle book of his Sharpen Your Tactics. One of the better of the types.
