    Lucena Position

I’ve always enjoyed R&P endings. Some knowledge of these basic ending have resulted in quite a few wins and draws over the years. There are three building blocks in these endings you must know: 1) The basic positions that are the fundamental building blocks of all R+P end-games so that you will be able to correctly play these types of endings. 2) Know the basic principles and ideas of these endings. E.g. R on the 7th rank, R’s behind passed P’s and K activity. 3) Studying master games to see how they played these endings.

The following is from a CC game where the Lucena Position cannot be reached and I had to yield a draw to a player rated only a little over 1200!
