Being an avid amateur Chess player and having born and brought up in Bengal, India, I think Hindu superstition was one of the reasons why Mohishunder Bonnerjee did not accompany John Cochrane back to Great Britain in 1941 for back in those days it was considered inauspicious to take a sea voyage for a Hindu Brahmin and they would be shunned by society. Another funny thing is even till this day, in many parts of Bengal, Chess is played with the 'Indian Rule'.
